Turning another corner

I originally planned to title this post "Boden is winning the war". The picture was taken Monday after a 7 day stretch of bad sleeping which culminated in a 2 1/2 hour scream fest from midnight to 2:30 in the morning last Sunday night...the night finally ended with me crawling into the guest bed with Boden at 4:30 in the morning in hopes that he would sleep for longer than an hour. As I lay there, bleary eyed, after having shed some tears myself during this torturous night and difficult week, I thought "I've won some battles during this war on sleep over the past 4 months but he is definitely winning the war". It was a low point, for schnizzle.

Then, as quickly as it took a turn for the worse, he seemed to be back on track and has been amazingly pleasant and sweet and sleeping okay for the past week (getting up three times a night is now considered "okay"). Crazy. While I'm not overjoyed with his routine, it is a routine...not one I want to be in for months to come, but it's a nice turn of events given the previous week.

I've definitely learned that, with babies, nothing lasts forever--good or bad, it's always changing. I might even say that this past week has been slightly rewarding...yes, finally! Boden has been almost ever-pleasant, only letting out squawks when he bops himself in the melon with a hard toy (happens often when you don't have good control of your limbs), when he's in need of that 4:30 nap (which I still don't understand, because with or without the nap, he insists on going to bed around 6/6:30), or when I'm trying to get him to sleep for an extra hour when he wakes up at 4:45 in the morning just to play with me (sweet that he wants some quality face time, but I'm in no mood for laughs at that time in the a.m.).

Thinking back on this most excellent week, a couple thoughts come to mind...going back to work is really going to suck: I should be taking my maternity leave NOW that he's a ball of fun and giggles; on the other hand, I feel better about heading off to work knowing that Grandma Susie and Daycare Lady will not be dealing with a high maintenance screamer (I think he's still high maintenance compared to some babies, but the "screamer" adjective is stricken from his title); and lastly, the skeptic in me suspects this change is probably a ruse...another very strategic move in General Boden's plan to win the war. If so, he is brilliant. Touche, my dear son, touche.
