So I was on the phone with a friend of mine the other day--her daughter, Emma, is 5 weeks older than Boden, so she was giving me the low-down on what she's learned. Emma has a massive amount of dark hair--it looks a bit like a perfectly shaped helmet. I asked Kara if she cut her hair already because it just looked too perfect in the photos. And, unlike Boden and most other babies, Emma doesn't look like a wrinkly old man...she looks like an old lady who has just come back from her weekly hair appointment with a fresh rinse and set. Kara said she gives Emma baths and washes her hair every 2 days or so because her hair gets so greasy/oily. Then she asked how Boden's bath times were going. Ummm...he's only had one other than the one he had in the hospital, I said (so 2 in his then 12 days of life) and he screamed his head off. Silence on the other end then a quick recovery on Kara's part. Oh, she said. Then she went on to tell me how her sister had pointed out some of the hidden nooks and crannies on babies to be sure you wash because they get incredibly stinky. One of these oft forgotten crannies are the elusive folds of the armpit. Our conversation continued about other new mama learnings and checking ins but I tucked the mental note of "check Boden's armpits for stench" away.
As soon as Boden woke up from his nap and I had him near naked in my lap, I lifted up his arms and started digging into the folds to see what the fuss was about. I mean, how could babies get stinky arm--whoa! My nose found it first--yuck! I'm pretty sure the stench in there was on par with an aged Stilton cheese and the strings of gunk I pulled out of there can only be identified as thin strips of string cheese of the Stilton variety. Needless to say, Boden got a bath shortly thereafter with extra attention paid to those little pits and all the little creases and crevices on his legs and thighs. The goal is not to age any more cheese on Boden's body.
The picture is not from his most recent bath time but the second time went pretty much the same as the first--lots of screaming.
